Laxapana power station started its

power generation in the 1950s while its

major expansions were developed till

the 1970s . The five power stations

located on the Kelani river basin , the

Wimalasurendra, old Laxapana, new

Laxapana, Canyon and Polpitiya,

generate 335MV of hydro power.

Several cracks were reported on the

walls of one of the turbine base

chambers of the Laxapana power

station. In order to assess the structural

soundness of a cracked turbine base

chamber at Laxapana power station ,

acceleration measurements were

obtained by using a dynamic data

logger and four acceleration gauges .

Measurements were made at 3

locations.
